Which Dive Shop has the best rates/service for a Padi Open Water Certification in Oahu, Hawaii?
Going to Oahu this August and was hoping to get certified for Open Water diving. Thus I was wondering if anyone has any experience of any dive shops and their open water courses/rates. They run pretty high and was hoping to find a deal. Thanks a lot.
There are a TON of dive centers on Oahu. I would caution you from going with the cheapest one. Be sure the facility is at least a PADI Dive Center / Resort / Boat. This means that someone has actually evaluated the business and they are held to certain safety standards. Don’t take a chance with some guy that teaches Scuba Lessons out of his van.
I will paste some links below of dive operators I have personal experience with.
Here’s a list of questions you should ask to determine the real cost of your Open Water course. If someone quotes you $99… that’s probably too good to be true. Ask about the following:
1) Rental gear:
What equipment included in the course? Some places will have you buy or bring your own mask, fins and snorkel. What about the other items: wetsuit, BC, tank, regulator, and will they give you analog gauges or a dive computer?
2) Open Water Dives
Some places will charge a boat fee if they are taking you for your first dives off a boat. Be sure to ask about that.
3) Certification card
After you have completed your course you will get a certification card (some will charge you for the card). This cost is usually around $30 and they call it an “application fee.”
4) Class reschedule
If you miss a scheduled class some will charge you for rescheduling.
5) Online training
Online training is a great way to spend less time in a classroom, and more time diving in paradise. I highly recommend this option BUT it also costs an additional $120. If the store offers online training, ask what the total price is – including the online training fee and the in-water training.
